Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Jewish Engagement Rings

Jewish engagement rings are what you may be looking for it you’re Jewish. D’uh! They can be diamondless rings engraved with verses. For example, a Jewish engagement ring might be engraved with a verse from the bible – these types of rings are usually called Ani L'Dodi rings. Or perhaps a ring engraved with the Hebrew initials of the future man and wife.

When the actual wedding comes along, a popular wedding ring is the Jewish Kabala ring. It has a particular combination of shapes – square on the outside to represent the home, and circular on the inside representing the ‘infinite’ nature of marriage – a circle goes around and around with no end.

Other types of Jewish rings include ones that have the Star of David design. This design can be worked into the ring in several different ways – perhaps as an embellishment to the main part of the ring, or even as the centerpiece.

Couples who wish to get a little patriotic can choose gemstones that represent the colors of Israel – blue and white. Typically white diamonds and sapphires would be used to achieve this, although there are other types of stones that could be used. Combination metal rings that have two differently colored metals are also popular.
